Why are so many parents complacent with picky eating?
When I was a kid (and it wasn’t that long ago), I was forced to eat oatmeal, cream of wheat, or wheat bread every morning for breakfast- no sugar cereals. I was also encouraged to try different fruits, veggies, etc. I understand that toddlers have normal food “stages,” but why do so many parents have the long-term attitude of “As long as they’re eating”? It probably contributes to the obesity crisis and diabetes as well…
I think as parents we have to pick our battles. My daughter Jamie was a horribly picky eater as a toddler.. I did my best to make her try new things, but some nights after a hectic day at work I just gave in and let her have dry cheerios, a hotdog and hawiian punch. I don’t think it’s beneficial to make a child eat something they absolutely hate, but no making them eat veggies just because they don’t “like” them is not doing the child any favors. I think there are ways to compromise… I used to give Jamie broccoli with melted cheese on top because she liked it better that way. Or I’d do the old “hide peas in the mashed potatos” trick.
I just believe, as with everything in life, there should be balance.
